DIY...but WHY?

My sister is always making fun of me because we can’t go ANYWHERE or do ANYTHING without me saying “I can make that” at least once! Seriously…it’s true. She has come to appreciate it though because she reaps the benefits of my “Susie-can-do” attitude! (is that an actual phrase or did I just make that up?) Since becoming aware of what I was putting in my body five years ago, I am much more careful when it comes to what I put on it!

Think about it…from lotions, to makeup, to soaps, to hair products, to perfume - we are constantly flooding our bodies with synthetic fragrances and toxic chemicals. The skin is the largest organ in the human body…its job is to protect us, so let’s protect it! Realizing that the toxins that we put on our bodies have the same negative effect as the toxins that go in our bodies through the foods we eat was HUGE for me. Since then, I have replaced almost everything with homemade products – I’m still working on perfecting some recipes (stay tuned…)

Here are three of my favorites…ENJOY :)

….using SUGAR?! Whaaat? Yes, girl!

3 oz hot water

1-2 tsp sugar (more sugar for more hold)

5 drops Lavender essential oil (I love putting Lavender in my hair products because it smells great and its properties are calming and relaxing – your hair can act as a portable natural diffuser…it’s a win-win in my book!)

Make it: Dissolve the sugar in hot water, then combine the ingredients in a 4 oz spray bottle.

Use it: Spray lightly onto hair. Add more layers if a stronger hold is desired and allow your hair to dry between each layer.

…like the ocean in a bottle…but better!

3 oz hot water

1 Tbsp sea salt

1 Tbsp fractionated coconut oil (you can use another liquid oil as well, I just have plenty of this on hand and I find it to be very lightweight and non-greasy!)

5 drops Lavender essential oil

Make it: Dissolve salt in water, heating on the stove if needed. Cool. Combine remaining ingredients and add to a 4 oz spray bottle.

Use it: Shake and spray lightly onto damp or dry hair (I use it both ways). Style as desired.

…friends don’t let friends buy expensive sugar scrubs!

½ cup coconut oil (organic, extra virgin, unrefined, cold pressed – all of the good stuff)

1 cup sugar

20 drops Lime essential oil

10 drops Peppermint essential oil

(Sometimes I make a small container using 2 Tbsp coconut oil to 4 tbsp sugar – I also scent my scrubs using various essential oils – so get creative and have fun with it!)

Make it: Whip up the coconut oil with a mixer and stir in the sugar and essential oils. It’s THAT easy!

Use it: Apply to problem areas and gently rub in a circular motion (don’t use too much pressure – let the sugar do its thang). Rinse - and now you are soft, silky, and moisturized!
